Carl Georg Wallin (Sweden 1893-1978)
Carl Wallin was born into a sea faring family in a small fishing village on the Southernmost tip of Sweden. His father was a ship's captain and on leaving school he joined the Transmarin shipping company where he became a Commander. From 1935 Wallin painted as a hobby until he entered a competition set up by Brostrom Lines in 1940, to paint their flagship, Wallin won the competition and the self-taught artist promptly left his job as a Commander to concentrate on his painting full time.
In all Carl Wallin produced more than 700 ship pictures, his most famous being the clipper ship used on the Cutty Sark whisky label, which is still in use today. In 1959 Wallin founded the Maritime Museum in Svanshall. During his life Wallin travelled the world painting commissions.
