Alfred Fontville de Breanski (British School, 1877-1957)
De Breanski was the son of Welsh artist Annie Roberts and the well-known and accomplished Victorian artist Alfred de Breanski (1852-1928). He was taught by his father and accompanied him on painting trips to the Highlands of Scotland and the Mountains of Wales, hence the similarity in their subject matter; however Alfred Fontville de Breanski also trained under Whistler in Paris, where he would have become familiar with the work of the Impressionists, thus explaining the difference in their techniques. A.F. de Breanski painted with less detailed brushwork than his father, instead he used broader strokes to capture soft light, and his particular skill was in creating perspective through the tonal composition of his paintings. Between 1905 and 1920 he went through an Impressionist period where he created a series of light, colorful paintings that have become highly sought-after. De Breanski exhibited several works at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.
